As a wholesale company, is it legal for us to charge customers a fee for credit card processing on purchases?

The owner here is charged for processing credit cards for orders and he wants to pass along this charge (4%) to his customers, is this allowed?

Check you agreement with your credit card companies to make sure, but I don’t believe it is.

I’m not sure if it is illegal or not, but Visa and Mastercard definitely frown upon it. I’m not quite sure what Discover or AMEX think.

Adding a surcharge for credit card processing isn’t illegal. It is, however, a violation of the merchant agreement with the credit card companies. Visa or Mastercard might just take away the "privilege" of accepting their cards.

4% is out rageous! Yes you can pass it on depending on which state. Some states you are able to and some states you can not. You definatley need a lower discount rate. Your processing company is charging you way too much! Mine is only 1.79%.
    Best wishes!

It is a violation of Visa and MasterCard regulations to add any surcharge. They can, and will, terminate your ability to accept credit cards. What’s more, you can be added to the "TMF" list and essentially lose your ability to get any processor to take your business. In other words, you lose the ability to accept credit cards now, and in the future. It’s not worth it. Customers want to use credit cards, and the fees involved are just part of the cost of doing business.
