And, usually, shorter names are preferred. First, cost should NOT be your first concern. (I once had a host that cost only $10 a year. I had several of my sites hosted on it, and several client sites. One day, none of the sites would open. After literally days of effort (their support was always slow), I finally figured out that they were simply out of business. This was bad enough, but one of my client’s email system was integrated within this host, and we couldn’t get it out. Let’s just say it was not a good experience. And I no longer use really cheap hosts, unless it’s for sites that are not critical.)
Verified “up time,” on the other hand, should be one of your first concerns. Band width, bandwidth transfer, the number of sites you can host, speed, security, and a number of other issues should also be reviewed.
One last caution.
There are a number of sites on the internet that claim to be “review” sites, promising to give you fair and accurate reviews of various hosting companies. In truth, most of these sites get paid a commission, sometimes a pretty hefty commission, if you purchase your hosting through their link. While this is not inherently wrong, just know that they often “recommend” the host that makes THEM the most money … not the site that would be best for YOU.
Of course, ethics come into play here. The hosts themselves need to be ethical about providing truly good service and the claims they make about themselves.
