Someone stole my identity in June and was able to access my Best Buy account and make ,000 worth of purchases in 2 days (without a credit card). Best Buy has stated that the purchases were properly processed and is holding me responsible for the purchases.
I can prove that 1) I was not in the city the purchases were made 2) it’s not my signature on the receipts
What is my next step with Best Buy or the police? And, if Best Buy still holds that I am responsible for these purchases, can I sue?
Thank you,
kim
if this helps,
I discovered this within days of the fraudulent purchases, as I had put security alerts on my credit. I immediately contacted Best Buy and cancelled my credit card.

well since you got the bill and didnt notify them within 30 days you are out of luck
next you have to read your bill immediately
make sure to cancel your cards
Best Buy has cameras…. ask the police to pull the camera footage and it will show who bought what with your card.
Best Buy made a major screw up. They authorized a purchase without proper identification. Now they are trying to cover their tracks and eliminate their losses.
You MUST file a police report.
You can’t sue for money – you haven’t lost any. But you can sue to prevent them from collecting on a debt that isn’t yours.
Keep ALL of your related documentation.
Then visit this site for more info on what you need to do.

Be sure you file a police report and get a copy of that report. Send Best Buy a letter appealing their decision. Include a copy of the police report and proof that you were not in the city (if you have documentation).
You may want to check with an attorney. You definitey want to fight this out with Best Buy before they sent it to a collection agency. Get EVERYTHING in writing. You want a papertrail.
