If I put a picture of myself on my website will businesses discriminate because I am african-american?

I am trying to restart my home-based business and would like to put a professional picture of myself on my website. I have a couple of clients already, but I got them through advertising on Craigslist. I have a full-time job but work part-time as an independent contractor through my home-based business. I provide Clerical (Administrative/Secretarial) services and I market small to large businesses in my area. I think a picture is a good idea to show people who they are working with and to let people know that I am serious about my business, however, I could also see people discriminating and not giving me a chance based on the color of my skin.

Do you feel people would discriminate because I am african-american? If you were a business and you saw my ad on the internet or in the paper and you decided to view my website, would you refrain from using my services solely based on the color my skin? Serious and honest answers, please.

yes but do it anyway because if someone discriminates against you because of your color then they aren’t smart enough to do business anyway

At some point people would findout you are black. Did you move from Africa or where you born in the united states? More people might not want to deal with an African on things over the internet with all the scams coming from Africans with the whole get rich we need help things.

No way. Not all people are just like that, racist.

I think you’re right in that when I see a well-done website with a picture of someone very professional-looking, I do take them more seriously. You’re probably justified in being concerned–there might be a few people who would be turned off–but would you really want those people’s business anyway? The positive attention that you would get from having a professional-looking photo probably outweighs the negatives from losing business.

That said, I think it also might depend on what area you’re targeting. If you’re targeting large business in big metropolitan areas/places that are pretty diverse, I don’t think it would matter very much, but if you’re targeting small businesses in rural areas or places where African American stereotypes might be more prevalent (the deep south, maybe?) it might be wiser to keep the photo off if you’re trying to get as many clients as possible. Messed up, but probably reality.

You seem well spoken and intelligent. If someone is going to discriminate against you just because you’re black, then its not worth their business. That’s just like someone saying i’m dumb because I have blonde hair. I think you should just leave it up to your clients to judge after they speak with you. I don’t know of anyone who wouldn’t hire you just because you’re black. That’s weird.

For me it depends on how well the ad was written. And although I may get heat I would that in 2007 we are little past the stereotypes and racism. Yes it does exist but I think (and hope) it would be limited undereducated and people not shopping around for clerical. Wouldn’t hurt to put references on the site as well

NO. Absolutely not. Businesses only care for money. If any business grows with your ideas it won’t see what’s behind it.
So don’t ever think of your colour or shape. What is most valued is your knowledge to upgrade and assist the business
with positive views of growth.Never ever think of Negative Thoughts.

Yes, some will just because you are black, but others will want to try your business because you are black.
