Is an internet merchant account different to a normal business merchant account?

My boss has challenged me with getting us an eCommerce website set up. We already have a standard merchant account so we can take payments over the phone. Would this be acceptable to a payment gateway or do we need a specific internet Merchant account too?

Most vendors will try to sell you another merchant account but its not required as long as your current merchant account is configured to accept Internet payments (e.g. MOTO). For example, if you’re using your current merchant account with a traditional POS Terminal you will require another merchant account to process ecommerce transations.

I strongly recommend Planetauthorize.Net as a payment gateway (company is SaleManager). These guys offer great rates and tons of free modules including support for 40+ certified shopping carts, mobile payment applications for the iPhone/iPad/itouch, Android, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices, Plug-ins for QuickBooks and recurring billing as a standard feature. You can also add electronic check payments.

    - Planetauthorize.Net pricing is available online at http://www.planetauthorize.net/pricing.html
    - Payment Gateway Setup Form (for use with existing merchant account) is available online at http://www.salemanager.com/assets/planetauthorize-gtwy-setup-form.pdf

    Good luck.

If you’re building an e-commerce business, you will need a merchant account in order to process accept credit and debit card payments. You may use Paypal, but some Shoppers online may feel you’re less credible because you don’t charge like other business else. You could use one of the gateways that don’t need a merchant account, however usually they take fees of up to ten percent of the transaction amount. its the same they differ a little.. for more info about merchant accounts and credit card processing http://freecreditcard-processing.com
