What's best for the business? Credit or debit transactions?

As a small business owner I'm trying to figure out which would be the best way for me to save on credit card transaction fees, processing fees, etc. Should I encourage customers to use debit or credit? I know there are a lot of variables to this question, but is there a general rule of thumb?
