I use the Agora free shopping cart, and manual credit card option. This is a much cheaper approach. If you are just starting out, and have a manual and cheapest credit card system, then go this way. You see, your website won't be breaking sales records at first.

Then buy Google Ads.

Would need more info to give you suggestions.
Do you already have a merchant account?
Do you just want to accept MC/VISA or also AX and Discover?
How many items does your shopping cart need to handle?
Who is hosting your site?
How are you building the site? (Online software from host, Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc.)

I would recommend authorize.net as the Payment Gateway. Since you already have a Merchant Account you can get it at a much lower cost through this reseller than directly from authorize.net http://www.gatewayonly.com/signup.html
There are MANY shopping carts certified by authorize.net
http://www.gatewayonly.com/shopcarts.html

Some I would suggest looking at http://www.storefront.net/solutions/new/shopping_cart_software.asp

http://emartnet.com/#

http://www.goecart.com/shopping_cart_software_price.asp

http://www.ecommercetemplates.com/

I would stay away from PayPal options as there seems to be alot of ruckus of them screwing online merchants all the way to the bank without a goodnight kiss.

All these above suggestions will cost you money - but offer alot of features and automation. If you want to go in at a low cost and don't mind entering CC#'s manually yourself then the previous poster's suggestion would probably be a good match for you.

But as you already have a merchant account perhaps you are expanding on an existing business and will have the sales volume that would justify all the options available.

And for low cost automated credit card processing check out http://www.transactionaltechnologies.com/index.html
I havn't personally used it, but have heard a few good things about what they offer.
