I know I have to deal with a merchant account provider again to earn from my online business, but I would like to deal with one that won’t burn me like the last time, I lost more than I earned. Is there a reasonably good provider online lately?

I know where you’re coming from. Depending on what provider you deal with, they can ask for anything from credit history, length of time in business, business type, types of products or services you do, price of products or services you offer, business financial information, etc. If you want to know about what they want to know from you, check the emerchant pay site.
There are planty of processors out there tied to very reliable banks. It is almost impossible to become a merchant service provider with out being sponsored by a very large bank. However, being sponsored by a large bank doesnt always make a processor honest and reliable.
You need to look for a company who is willing to post there fees online for all to see. That will be a processor who beleives in providing great service along with low cost to its clients, while ensuring a long temr business relationship.
You also need to find a processor who has a diversity of payment processing services such as virtual online terminals, check processing, online reporting, etc…
